FTP Clients
Windows XP
Windows XP has built-in FTP support and works easily with MixDepot. To add your upload server to XP, follow these steps:
- Double-click on My Network Places on the desktop.
- Click "Add a network place".
- Select "Choose another network location".
- Enter your server (for example ftp://horizon.mixdepot.net)
- Username: (your username)
- When prompted for your password, use your account password.
- You can now drag & drop your audio files into the FTP window! After the upload is done, check the Files page and your file should be listed and can now be used to create a mix.
Mac OSX
We recommend using the Cyberduck FTP client for OSX. It's free and open source. Follow these simple steps:
- Select New Bookmark from the Bookmarks menu.
- Protocol: FTP
- Server: horizon.mixdepot.net
- Port: 21
- Username: (your username)
- Close the bookmark options window. You should now see the bookmark in the bookmarks drawer.
- Double-click the new bookmark to connect. Enter your password when prompted.
- You can now drag and drop audio files to upload them, or select Action -> Upload from the toolbar.
- When done, click Disconnect or just quit Cyberduck.
Other Clients
If you're looking for a good standalone Windows FTP client, check out SmartFTP. Firefox users may want to try FireFTP, a cross-platform FTP client extension currently in beta.
General FTP Information
Renaming and Deleting Files
Renaming and deleting of files is disabled on the FTP server in order to keep the database consistent with what is in your FTP account. Use the Files page to rename or delete your files.
File Formats
You should only upload audio files to the FTP server, specifically the following types are supported and can be read automatically to determine the length and bitrate of the file: mp3, ogg, mp4, m4a, m4p, wma, flac, and wav. If you upload an unsupported file, you will receive an email and should delete the file through the Files page. Do not attempt to use an unsupported file in a mix.
Upload Resume
You may resume a broken upload without causing any problems. Be sure to check the final size and length of your audio file when adding it to your mix to make sure you aren't using a half-completed file.
Active Mix Files
Audio files used in active mixes are renamed to start with a period. This prevents you from overwriting the file accidentally and causing download problems. You will be unable to modify any "dot-files" without first deleting the mix using that file. After deleting the mix, the file will be renamed back to its normal format.
