dj-Vox

dj-Vox, a.k.a. Bo Johnson comes from a long life of musical background and influences from around the world. Vox discovered music early in life. Born in Orange County, California his dad exposed him to the oldie sounds of Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, and the Beach Boys when he was just three. By age seven he was reading music and playing the sax while living with his family in Singapore. Once back living in Texas he discovered classic rock that only the south can supply. The Allman Brother, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and CCR fueled his headphones. From there he journeyed to Lagos, Nigeria where he was exposed to the great rhythms of African grooves and melodies unlike anywhere else in the world. He dabbled a little on the drums before moving to London and choosing the guitar as his primary instrument. The 90’s rock scene was peaking and while playing along to sounds of Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Pantera, London exposed him to the rave scene and all its vast wealth of EDM. He was fortunate to be at the center of the world for all genres of music.

Vox now operates out of Boston having moved back state side in 2000 to attend university. After playing guitar for Boston’s metal band Shattered Existence he has finally settled into the genre of underground house. Once graduated from Berklee College of Music, Vox was asked to join Bassmint Recordings in Boston and makes up one third of the deep house label. Bassmint Recordings has just celebrated its fifth release in March of 2007, and is definitely a label to keep your eye on in the coming year. Vox has become a steady figure in the underground house scene in the northeast in the last two years and has grown a loyal fan base. With appearances at Rise and the Phoenix Landing in Boston, Red Square in Albany, and Bassmint's monthly residencies at the Red Door and Dover Soul in New Hampshire, he continues to research and evolve his sound. You can be sure to see and hear more from dj-Vox in the months and years to come.

I'm stepping outside of my box for my first trip to Detroit to bring you some minimal tech, techno, and tech house. This is a mix of some of the sounds that have filtered their way into my bag over the last month. Hope you enjoy the beats and hit me up if you'll be in Detroit this weekend. I will be playing the Bump da Funk party on Saturday May 26th at the Leland in downtown Detroit. And as always hard copies of the promo will be available. Cheers!
